Know Your Numbers — Labour Burden

The gap between what you pay someone and what it costs the business to have them on site productively for one hour is typically 2–3× the base wage. This calculator works in three layers: (1) global time settings — working weeks, hours per day, and non-productive time that apply to the whole crew, (2) per-member cost — salary or hourly rate plus all statutory loadings and on-costs, giving your true hourly floor, and (3) rate layers — your fixed business overheads (entered as a dollar amount) and profit margin, to arrive at your minimum sell rate. Every DMPL labour item in Pricing Manager is checked against the resulting floor rate.

Non-productive time (%)

Non-productive time covers the portion of each on-site day lost to travel between jobs, moving materials, site setup, and waiting. At 8hrs/day, 1hr = 12.5%. Start with 13% and tune it as you calibrate to your real-world experience. Admin days (quoting, invoicing, running the business) are set per crew member — typically 1 day/week for you as the operator, 0 for employees who are on tools all week.

Simple card (you as director/sole operator) — enter your annual salary draw, super rate, WorkCover rate, and direct on-costs (vehicle, tools). Leave is not deducted — as a sole operator your salary absorbs it.

Employee card — enter base hourly rate and statutory entitlements in plain terms: leave weeks per year, sick days, public holidays. The app converts these to cost automatically. Switch between Permanent and Casual — casual replaces the leave fields with a single casual loading %.

Vehicle / fuel and Tools & PPE go on the crew member card as annual dollar amounts — not in the overhead section. These are direct costs tied to that person being on site.

Production efficiency ratio reflects output relative to a qualified tradesman. A casual at 1.8× means every hour of their time costs the equivalent of 1.8hrs of tradesman output.

Crew Members

Break-even analysis anchored to DMPL idx 101 — the 2100×920 single hang. This is the industry reference task: understood by every hanger, consistent scope, no ambiguity. The table answers one question: how many of these doors do I need to complete in a day to reach each rate level? Travel, setup, and site-specific conditions sit outside the idx 101 scope and should be priced separately. If your day rate divided by the idx 101 price gives you a number that feels unreachable, your DMPL price, your crew cost, or both need attention.

What to enter as Annual overheads:
Go to your P&L and add up every fixed cost that runs whether you are on site or not — accounting fees, bookkeeping, bank fees, phone, internet, government fees, insurance (not vehicle — that goes on the crew card). Do not include your salary, super, vehicle, or tools — those are already captured in the crew member card above.

Example: accounting $5,180 + bookkeeping $3,666 + phone $2,787 + bank fees $2,760 + admin $1,511 + office $903 + govt fees $321 = $17,128 → enter 17128. The app calculates the recovery % automatically based on your productive hours.

What each layer means:
True hourly cost — your floor. Every hour billed below this loses money.
+ Overhead recovery — covers fixed business costs. Now you are breaking even on everything.
+ Net profit margin — your target minimum sell rate. Quote below this and the business falls short.
